Positive Behaviour Management Video

Positive behaviour management has long been a passion of Mike. Behaviour was judged to be of a high standard by inspectors in each of the three schools that Mike led as a headteacher.

‘Pupils are well behaved, understand what is expected of them and are considerate, courteous to each other and adults and visitors. Older pupils show a high level of maturity and responsibility, which enhances the quality of life and the range of educational experiences provided by the school. Pupils show respect towards their peers and adults and the quality of relationships within the school is very good. Pupils make a significant contribution to creating a happy and supportive learning environment.’

‘Standards of behaviour are excellent in classes and around the school. Nearly all pupils feel safe in school and feel that the school deals well with any bullying. All pupils in Year 6 respond well to take on additional responsibilities in the school , for example in the eco council, and working as playground buddies, lunchtime monitors  and digital leaders, and they undertake these roles  with enthusiasm and maturity. As a result, the pupil voice in the school is particularly strong.’

Mike has been Head Of School Improvement And Inclusion for a local authority. He therefore has extensive experience of behaviour management at both a school and local authority level.

He has worked with Portal Training to create a video to support schools develop their own whole school positive behaviour management policy.

The video is 1 hour and 16 mins long and can be used in a number of ways:

  • It can be used by a headteacher, governors and/or senior leaders to review the existing policy
  • It can be used as a tool to develop a new whole school positive behavioural management policy…. perhaps at a training day or during staff meetings.  The video can be paused at the end of each section and a discussion held to determine how you want that particular aspect of the strategy to look within your school. This can be recorded in writing before moving on to the next aspect.  By the end of the day, you could have a draft policy, co-constructed by all present for consideration by those with a Governance role or for consultation with parents.

‘This video shares with you what I’ve learned along the way.  It contains examples of current practice from pupils and staff working within schools today.  At no point can I tetll you exactly what to do. I don’t know your learners or your context. What I can do is share with you the theory and examples of practice. Its for you to decide what is most appropriate for your school.

I cannot promise you that all pupils will always be well behaved but I can assure you that if applied consistently each day, this strategy will lead to improved wellbeing of staff and pupils and lead to pupils being far more ready to learn.’ Mike Glavin November 2021
