Working With Governors

Local authorities and consortia offer a range of training that is adequate for the needs of many Governing Bodies. However, there are times when Governors need bespoke support to address the challenging situation/context in which they find themselves.

Mike provides a bespoke service to Governors, coaching them in their role and where appropriate advising them how to move out of the pressured situation in which they find themselves.

All services are bespoke. As an example of his work: Mike has recently worked with a Governing Body of a school labelled as ‘causing concern’. He helped them understand why they had been placed in this category and to begin to recognise what they needed to know and compare it with what they did know.

Through weekly workshop sessions, Governors moved from an overly positive view of their performance to understanding what a good school should look like and the action that they needed to take to enable ‘their’ school to become good. They helped develop an action plan, assigned themselves key roles and developed a full understanding of what was required from them for the school to move away from the category of school causing concern.

Mike has also run interactive workshops for governors.  These have included:

-Understanding The Role of Governor.

-Governors’ Role In Teaching and Learning Standards.

-Governors’ Role In Self-Evaluation and School Improvement.

 

In  addition Mike has worked with Governors and staff in schools to help them devise a protocol for Governor visits to schools.  This helped them address Estyn’s recommendation within its report of May 2023: School Governors Acting As Critical Friends and the Impact Of  Governor Training

‘Ensure that governors have regular and worthwhile opportunities to observe first hand the progress that their school is making towards meeting its priorities.’
